In order to strengthen the quality assurance system of medical education, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health jointly issued the Standards for Basic Medical Education (for Trial Implementation) (MOE Document No. [2008] 9), and set up the Expert Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education (hereinafter called Expert Committee) and the Working Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Education (hereinafter called Working Committee), to conduct the accreditation of medical program. A secretariat is set up under the Working Committee, with its office in Peking University Health Science Center responsible for the daily operation of the Working Committee. Responsibilities of the Expert Committee1 Supervising the accreditation activities of the working committees;2 Approving the final decision on the accreditation;3 Dealing with any appeals on the assessment;4 Determining the necessity and timing for the revision of the Standards.Responsibilities of the Working Committee1 Stipulating and revising the educational standards and guidelines for medical programs and the accreditation procedures;2 Formulating annual, middle and long-term programs of accreditation;3 Appointing assessment teams for the accreditation of medical programs;4 Reviewing accreditation reports and recommendations and submitting them to the Expert Committee for approval;5 Undertaking international cooperation related to accreditation and facilitating educational research;6 Providing training to the assessors and the institutions to be accredited;7 Establishing and maintaining a database for accreditation activities, a database of potential assessors and an accreditation website.Since the pilot accreditation of Harbin Medical University against Basic Medical Education WFME Global Standards for Quality Improvement in May 2006, 20 medical schools will have received accreditation by the end of 2013. So far, the accreditation of medical education in China has been gradually improved in the implementation process.
